Red Sea diving June 2012

by on Jul.27, 2012, under Underwater Photography

Underwater shots taken during dives in the Red Sea June 2012. This time diving with Ocean College Diving, who were pretty top notch. Finally got to dive Thistlegorm, but a combination of my crap photography skills, camera equipment, and visibility during the dive left me with only a handful of semi decent shots ..! Great dives though. Shark & Yolanda was ,as usual awesome as was Jackson reef and my new favourite dive site , the little dived Canyon at Marsa Brayka. Fantastic.

So…you spend loads of money on Scuba diving (PADI actually stands for Pay.Another. Dollar. In) , then you get to see a fantastic Manta Ray, close enough to touch…while snorkelling. Unforgettable. June 18, Rah Dhigga Island.

Fish Farm?

by on Mar.29, 2010, under General

This is nuts: It takes around 6 tonnes of wild fish to reduce to 1 tonne of fishmeal, and then anything from 1.5 to 3 tonnes of meal to produce 1 tonne of farmed salmon. Comprende? we catch and kill 6 tonnes of wild fish to turn it in to 1 tonne of fishmeal…to then feed to other fish…to then kill and eat.

“Farmed fish are fed oils and meal made from other fish: close to a third of the catch from the world’s fisheries is used for non-food products, with the majority being converted into fishmeal and fish oil.” (read more)

Now, I like a salmon steak as much as anyone, but if this is the main way we have of producing ‘farmed’ fish, then something is sadly wrong don’t you think?
