Maldives Diving 2013

by on Jun.15, 2013, under Scuba, Underwater Photography

70% of the planet is covered in water…approximately 1% of the population of the world Scuba dives. Of that 1% a few very lucky people get to dive in The Maldives. Sometimes life ain’t so bad.

Here are a few shots taken during dives in the South Male Atol , Maldives May-June 2013. Good to be diving with Dive Ocean again, based on Biyadhoo Island. It’s the start of the monsoon and the Indian Ocean is filling up nicely with plankton…great for the sea-life…not so great for taking pictures. Had some fantastic dives in some pretty challenging conditions including whipping down Cocoa Corner at 23 metres doing what felt like 20 knots. Definitely ‘strong current’ drift diving in my book.

Awesome is an overused term, but diving in the Maldives this year was very , very…awesome.

Sad to say that on one dive to Kandooma we came across a shark carcass tied to a concrete block dropped on to the top of the Thila. Clear evidence that illegal Shark fishing is still going on….depressing. Sharks (and Mantas and Whales) are worth so much more ALIVE!
