Fish Farm?
by cushty on Mar.29, 2010, under General
This is nuts: It takes around 6 tonnes of wild fish to reduce to 1 tonne of fishmeal, and then anything from 1.5 to 3 tonnes of meal to produce 1 tonne of farmed salmon. Comprende? we catch and kill 6 tonnes of wild fish to turn it in to 1 tonne of fishmeal…to then feed to other fish…to then kill and eat.
Now, I like a salmon steak as much as anyone, but if this is the main way we have of producing ‘farmed’ fish, then something is sadly wrong don’t you think?
Bluefin Tuna
by cushty on Mar.18, 2010, under General, Scuba
This is very worrying. “A proposal to ban the export of Atlantic Bluefin tuna, which is a sushi mainstay in Japan, has been rejected by a UN wildlife meeting. Stocks have fallen by about 85% since the industrial fishing era began”
This quote says it all ” The market for this fish is just too lucrative… for enough governments to support a truly sustainable future for the fish ”

The BBC wants to hear from you?
by cushty on Mar.11, 2010, under Music Stuff
From http://www.38degrees.org.uk
The BBC Trust has now launched an official consultation on its proposals for massive cuts to its services. It’s asking us to email to say what we think of their plans to cut their website in half and scrap BBC 6 Music and Asian Network.
We need to make sure the BBC gets an overwhelming number of responses against these plans. The more of us who send an email against the cuts, the more chance we have of changing their mind.
It only takes 1 minute to email the BBC Trust and speak out against the cuts using this online tool – please click here to add to the pressure: http://www.38degrees.org.uk/email-the-BBC-Trust
http://drop.io/
by cushty on Mar.10, 2010, under Tech
Drop.io is a simple file drop. You create an arbitrary directory name on their site and upload files directly into it. Share the resulting URL with anybody else and they can grab any of those files. You don’t have to go through all kinds of complicated steps to set things up; you don’ t even have to register to take advantage of the service. They’re not particular about what you upload, so you can use it to share text files, documents, images, audio, or just about anything else.
Opera 10.5 web browser
by cushty on Mar.03, 2010, under Tech
Opera 10.50 final has just been released. Most users who have noticed the increased development pace of the new Opera browser suspect that it had something to do with the introduction of the so called browser ballot screen in Europe which can be a chance to increase the market share in this popular market.
Opera 10.50 brings a lot of new features to the table, most noticeable the speed improvements which leaves Firefox behind in the dust, at least for now.
